We are saddened by the news of a long-time friend, and Emeritus Board Member, Bud Shivers passing. Bud made a tremendous impact on our community and served in many capacities within the Seton Healthcare Family. He was a trusted advisor, historian, and someone who cared deeply about our Ministry and Community.
A prominent businessman, civic leader and philanthropist, Shivers was involved in philanthropy for more than four decades. He chaired the Seton Fund when it was first established in 1981 and guided the Seton Fund Board of Trustees and staff in raising more than $200 million for Seton’s health care ministry. He also served on the Ascension Texas Board of Directors.
In the 1980s, Shivers led Seton’s successful effort to establish the first neonatal intensive care unit in Central Texas, the Marialice Shivers Regional Neonatal Center. It was named for his mother, also a longtime Seton friend and supporter. Shivers raised more than $3 million to create an endowment for Seton’s three community health care centers, which, each year, provide primary care services to more than 15,000 low-income Central Texans.
He and his late wife, Robin Shivers, worked tirelessly to establish the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM) for the city’s professional musicians. With their help, HAAM has raised more than $1.5 million to provide its members with affordable access to high-quality medical health services from Seton Family of Hospitals providers.
Bud was our friend and advocate. His passion for our mission and serving his community goes beyond measure.
