Rain or Shine: How the “Keeping it Renal” Team Made Waves at the 2023 NKF Austin Kidney Walk!
On a rainy day in November, staff from the Dell Seton-UT Health Austin Abdominal Transplant Center gathered with their family and friends to participate in the 2023 National Kidney Foundation (NKF) Austin Kidney Walk. Despite the wet weather, the “Keeping it Renal” team were in high spirits as they walked with others in the community to build hope for a future without suffering.
The DSMC-UT Abdominal Transplant Center team was one of the Top 3 fundraising teams. They raised over $4,718 to support the work of NKF who ensure that 37 million Americans living with chronic kidney disease get diagnosed, treated and supported early. This year, the team walked in honor of Jeff and Emily Ontiveros.
Dr Nicole Turgeon, director of the Abdominal Transplant Center said, “We were honored to walk with our patients and donors to bring awareness to kidney disease, kidney transplantation and living kidney donation.”
Jayna Patel, Transplant RN Manager, said: “Our team wanted to participate in this event because our mission is to help those with kidney disease as well as honor our patients and kidney donors. We hope to bring awareness and education to the Central Texas community that transplant is a safe option as is living kidney donation.”
The NKF walk was covered by local news media, including Fox 7 Austin.
The Abdominal Transplant Center diagnoses, treats, and manages the care of adult patients in need of a kidney, pancreas, or simultaneous kidney and pancreas transplant as well as those willing to be a living kidney donor. Patients are cared for by a dedicated multidisciplinary care team with expertise of multiple specialists across a variety of disciplines.
The Ascension Seton Foundation raises funds to support the work of the Abdominal Transplant Center, a collaboration between Dell Seton Medical Center and Dell Medical School at The University of Texas.
